Excellent news: the 'Arts of Resistance' event at The Henderson Gallery, postponed from the 27th January, will now go ahead on Wednesday 12th May at 7PM. Sandy Moffat, former Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art, and Alan Riach, Professor of Scottish Literature at Glasgow University will discuss their book, published by the good people at Luath Press, in which they examine the relationship between art and dissident politics in Scottish culture.
The work grew out of a series of conversations between Moffat and Riach at the National Gallery of Scotland, conversations which were by all accounts both compelling and vastly entertaining, so we look forward to a cracking night. What's more, it'll be May, not January, so it shouldn't be quite as freezing, though you never can tell. Whatever the weather, it's a free event. Numbers however are limited, so to book your place please call 0131 225 7464 or email mail@thehendersongallery.com

made up of Edinburgh based Italian jazz singer Elena Zini, Italian adopted New Zealand double bassist Alastair Cole, US percussionist Jamie Pitts, and Scottish musicians Murdo Turner (guitar), Gregor shanks (piano). The group was formed around the idea of creating a collective of like minded Edinburgh based musicians and through numerous collaborations have been joined on stage by a wide variety of Scottish folk and jazz musicians. Musically the group draws on a catalogue of music from the Italian, French and South American music landscape, as well as crafting their own translations of Scottish and jazz standards into Italian. Photos and audio can be seen and heard online in their website www.bicyclethievesjazz.co.uk. or the Bicycle Thieves Facebook Group.

Let's be honest: new performance spaces in Edinburgh at this time of year are ten a penny. However, when the theatrical venture is backed by Henderson's, Scotland's legendary vegetarian restaurant and a capital institution for almost fifty years, and when their fringe programme is launched by none other than John Cairney, actor, writer, raconteur and the greatest Burns of his generation, returning to the country after seventeen years in New Zealand, then perhaps it is time to sit up and take notice.
