Henderson's has been hailed by 'Scotland the Best' as a 'Scottish Pioneer', a groundbreaking business that changed the nation forever. The shop first opened in 1962, providing an outlet for the produce of Janet and Mac Henderson's East Lothian farm. The legendary basement restaurant soon followed, and quickly became an Edinburgh institution. Since then Henderson's has acquired a bistro, a bakery, a deli, a gallery and an international reputation for cutting edge vegetarian cuisine while remaining true to the founding philosophy of serving delicious, wholesome food, using the best and freshest ingredients, and all at affordable prices.
Today, approaching its 50th year, Henderson's remains as vibrant as ever. The Henderson Gallery has opened a second exhibition space downstairs and launched an innovative artist-in-residence scheme. The Bistro has been recently refurbished creating an even more elegant and enticing ambience; the shop continues to expand its range of products; and this year Henderson's is to become an official venue of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
